Sozopol-Chernomorets Eco-Innovation for St. Nicolas Port Cleanup (SCeNic) is a project of the Municipality of Sozopol, aimed at evaluating the most innovative European solutions for combating chemical pollution in coastal waters. The project examines how RHE-MEDiation's technologies can theoretically be applied in the conditions of the Black Sea - a marine environment with unique hydrology, limited water exchange and high sensitivity to pollution.
The main focus is Port „St. Nikola“ in Chernomorets - one of the largest fishing ports in Bulgaria and an area where economic activities, tourism, environmental challenges and cultural heritage intersect. The project produced a detailed theoretical assessment including hydrodynamic analysis, modelling of possible scenarios for the application of water quality monitoring and improvement technologies, and a plan for potential future implementation.
SCeNiC creates and Living Lab - an open platform for participation of the local community, the fisheries sector, business, academia and institutions. This model ensures that future solutions will be developed collaboratively, transparently and sustainably.
The project contributes to the objectives of Mission „Restoring our oceans and waters by 2030“, supports the development of policies to reduce pollution and creates a roadmap for the future application of innovative technologies in other Bulgarian and European ports.
The project is funded by the RHE-MEDiation initiative, with the support of the Horizon Europe programme of the European Union.
